Curator's statement by Jana Bohutínská

Identity – personality – authenticity

I feel that the issues taken up by IDENTITY.MOVE! are very close to issues of personality. It is because everything is begun and ended by an individual person, by an individual identity. Especially nowadays, when the result of mixing cultures is the enforcement of stereotypes. I believe in authenticity and in change instead of stability. To identify means to research, investigate, sometimes discover. Identity connects us to inspiration instead of copying. Identity crises in the united Europe and the globalised world could result from the lack of trust in authenticity.

I see two lines of identity – we can understand identity physically (the body etc.) and mentally (thinking, spirituality, gender etc.).

There are strong connections between identity and history, locality, culture, aesthetics, politics, community, spirituality, language, lifestyle, humanity, scholarship, family... 

There is no identity without individual creativity and the development of a personal potential. Artists are scouts of our identity. They can see hidden places. They are able to let us look out of the box.

Identity is strongly connected to values on an individual and community level. Identity is based on values as is the awareness of commitment and responsibility – responsibility for explaining history (the past), responsibility for the present and for using our potential, which will produce the future. But generally, when speaking about identity, it is better to think about the present and the future than about the past.

Personal identity is influenced by two powers: stability and motion; change is an occasion. We design our identity in a psychological, aesthetical and ethical sense as an answer to the questions „Who am I?“ and „Who am I going to be?“.

In individual coaching we work with a pyramid. On the top of this pyramid stands the issue of identity. It is above everything – above the issue of place and people (where and with whom am I or want to be?), activities and strong points (what and how?) and personal values.
